eBay SEO: the Official Rules, Translated for Sellers
eBay publishes its own SEO guidance for sellers. Almost none of it is written for Motors — and the parts category quietly breaks two of its assumptions: most aftermarket parts have no barcode, and fitment data matters more than any keyword. Here is each official rule, rewritten for the way people actually search for auto parts.
The six official rules, and what they mean on Motors
| eBay's guidance | What it means for auto parts |
|---|---|
| Use your keywords in the title and the description | Search reads the whole listing page. The part number and the year/make/model belong in your description copy too — not just the title. |
| Don't repeat keywords; read the title aloud | "Control Arm Control Arms Lower Control Arm Ford" reads like spam because it is spam. One clean mention per term, then stop. |
| Pick the correct category | Filing a control arm under Steering, or a headlight assembly under Light Bulbs, hides it from the buyers searching for it. |
| Supply unique identifiers (Brand, MPN, GTIN) | Unbranded aftermarket parts legitimately have no GTIN — 'Does Not Apply' is correct. The OEM number goes in Interchange, never in MPN. |
| Complete your Item Specifics | Blank specifics remove your listing from filtered search, which on Motors is how most buyers shop. |
| SEO is one input, not the whole ranking | Price, shipping speed, returns policy, photo quality and seller performance decide whether a found listing gets bought. |
Based on eBay's published seller guidance (sources listed at the bottom of this page).
Rule 1: the first four words do the heavy lifting
eBay's guidance is that the highest-traffic search terms belong at the front of the title, because that is where relevance weighting is strongest and where a truncated mobile title stops. In auto parts, the highest-traffic term is almost always the part type — buyers type control arm or brake pads, not pads for brake.

Nice Quality Suspension Replacement Part Fit Ford Truck!!!Four wasted words before anything searchable, plus decorative punctuation eating the 80-character budget.
Two habits worth keeping: cap the title at 80 characters, and drop exclamation marks, asterisks and repeated words. Every one of those characters could have held 2015-2020 or 527-027 — the strings buyers type when they already know what they need.
The eBay title builder applies the same structure, and you can see it on a real part in this Ford F-150 control arm listing.
Rule 2: the description is indexed, so stop wasting it
The most common Motors mistake is a title that is carefully optimised and a description that says "high quality product, fast shipping, buy with confidence". eBay's search reads listing text beyond the title, which means that description is throwing away the second-best piece of keyword real estate on the page.
The fix is not stuffing. It is writing one honest paragraph that naturally contains the part name, the main part number and the vehicle range — the same three facts a buyer needs to confirm the part fits:
The description also carries the compatibility table, which is where a buyer decides to trust you. A well-structured fitment chart does double duty: it lifts conversion and it puts year/make/model text on the page for search to read. See the fitment chart generator for the format.
Rule 3: unique identifiers, and the GTIN gap in auto parts
eBay asks for Brand, MPN and GTIN because both eBay and external search engines use product identifiers to match listings. That guidance assumes a retail product in a box with a barcode. Aftermarket auto parts frequently don't have one.
- GTIN / UPC / EAN: if your supplier didn't give you a barcode,
Does Not Applyis the correct answer. Inventing one is worse than leaving it empty. - Brand:
Unbrandedfor generic aftermarket. Don't enter the vehicle brand — that is a compatibility fact, not a manufacturer. - MPN: the part number assigned by whoever made your item. For an unbranded part that is
Does Not Apply. - Interchange Part Number: the rightful home for every OEM number your part replaces (527-027, K643168, …). This is where buyers search by number.
Getting that split wrong is the fastest route to a VERO complaint and a returns wave. The full field-by-field reasoning is in the Item Specifics guide.
Rule 4: category mistakes are invisible errors
eBay illustrates this with a pocket watch: file it under Watches and it competes with a thousand wristwatches, but file it correctly and the handful of collectors who want it can find it. Auto parts have the same trap with an extra twist — some Motors categories support a structured compatibility table and some don't, and choosing one without it costs you the fitment field entirely.
The parallels that catch sellers out:
- Control arms filed under Steering instead of Suspension
- Headlight assemblies filed under Light Bulbs
- Mirror glass filed under the full mirror assembly category
- Sensor-only parts filed in a kit category (or the reverse), which mismatches your piece count
Worth noting: your supplier's data package is not a reliable guide here. Distributor feeds routinely carry a category that contradicts the product type — one of the checks worth running before you publish, not after.
What SEO cannot fix
Search optimisation decides whether a buyer finds you. It does not decide whether they pick you. eBay's Best Match also weighs price and shipping cost, delivery speed, free returns, photo quality and your seller performance history. A perfectly optimised listing with one blurry photo and the slowest shipping option in the category will still lose.
Treat it as two separate jobs: SEO gets the impression, the offer converts it.
The pre-publish checklist
- Title under 80 characters, part type in the first four words, no decorative punctuation
- Main part number present in the title and in the description paragraph
- Year / make / model / trim written out in the description, not only in the compatibility table
- Brand, MPN, Interchange Part Number, Placement on Vehicle and Type all filled — or marked Does Not Apply
- OEM numbers in Interchange only; no vehicle brand in the Brand or MPN field
- Category supports a compatibility table and matches the product type, not the supplier's habit
- Piece count in the description agrees with the pack quantity and the left/right pairing
- Title reads like a sentence when spoken aloud
The ListKraft listing generator runs the data-driven half of this list automatically: it fills Item Specifics only from values that exist in your supplier data package, marks the rest as Does Not Apply, and flags contradictions — wrong category, single-side part numbers on a pair, placement that doesn't match the fitment — in a Notes to Seller block before you publish.

- Does SEO matter on eBay?
- Yes. eBay publishes SEO guidance for sellers and search relevance is one of the inputs behind Best Match. Optimisation gets you seen; price, shipping, photos and seller performance decide the sale.
- What is Cassini?
- The name sellers use for eBay's internal search engine. eBay doesn't brand it that way in its help pages, but the mechanics are the same — the engine reads title, Item Specifics, category and description text to match buyer queries.
- How long should an eBay title be?
- Up to 80 characters, with the highest-traffic terms first. Put the part type and main part number at the front, then fitment, then side or placement.
- Do aftermarket auto parts need a GTIN or UPC?
- Most unbranded aftermarket parts have no barcode, and 'Does Not Apply' is accepted. Never invent one — a wrong identifier is worse than an empty field.
- Does keyword stuffing hurt eBay rankings?
- Yes. eBay warns against repeating keywords and suggests reading your title aloud as the test. Spam patterns get demoted.
- Does the description affect eBay search?
- It does — search reads the whole listing page. Include the part number and vehicle range naturally in the description, and use it to carry the fitment table.
